Pokie Ninja is a browser based RPG in which characters from the animes Naruto and Bleach face off. Pokie Ninja has won several Game of the Year awards in the browser-based games category, so let’s take a look at it.
Browser-based fun
It has been a while since I played a browser-based game. I first played The Crims. The Crims was a criminal simulation game. You would plan robberies, either by yourself or with friends, deal drugs, buy clubs, run prostitution rings, get bodyguards, assassinate players that had a price on their head put by other players, spend time in rehab. You know, good family fun.
But Crims was purely browser based. Pokie Ninja on the other hand has a flash interface, which is nice. When you start the game you get to choose between 18 characters and what village you are from. If you’ve watched the Naruto series you will immediately be familiar with characters like Choji. Then the game starts and you are immediately thrown into a battle with Gaara. What you see here is how the combat system works in this game, in that you have no control over your character in fights, which is a bit lame, but it does make the game play out as a purer browser game.
The game, of course is grindy, but you can choose the chain battles, and you can let the computer fight for a couple of hours. When you come back you will have gained all of the experience and items from that fight. There are quests to help you level up and get items, and of course there are arenas for PVP. You can capture and train pets. The skill system works by assigning different skills which your character will automatically use in battle.
The Conclusion
Pokie Ninja manages to come pretty close to an MMO in its design. It’s a fun browser-based game with well implemented mechanics. Some of its features are new, some have been tried and tested, but they all come together to make a game that you will sink countless hours into. So did it deserve its Game of the Year awards? Yes.
