This is an adventure game which is first person based and it is all about a fire watchman. The game is developed by campo Santo and published by panic. This game doenst have the multiplayer mode.
The game is set in Shoshone national forest based in Wyoming and it is a very picturesque 2.5 million acre land expanse. There are rivers, mountains, lakes, canyons and forest all around. This landscape is so rugged and it is covered with spruce, pine and fir trees all over making it an area where wild fires can really thrive. You are the new fire watchman and you need to be on the lookout. You need to be able to spot the fires as they arise and then make a report immediately so as to make sure that they do not spread. Though the job is lonely, it is the kind of job that you were looking forward to.
The Fire watch protagonist is Henry and he is running away that’s why he needs a job within this area. The hero prefers this forested wilderness situated in North America. He has a lot to deal with and just needs a break away from all the craziness in the middle of nowhere.
After taking a very long trek in the woods, you make it to the tower. As you walk into the tower, you hear a walkie talkie and you are urged to pick the gadget up. This is yet another lookout fellow and her name is Delilah. She makes the introduction by asking you in amischievous and brazenly way what has made you take the job so far away. As henry, you are all exhausted and the probing catches you off guard so you simply ignore the question and go off to bed. This is where the new life begins.
In the day that follows, you receive an apology from Delilah because of the probing and a friendship starts. It is something that is so playful and simple. You start off into the wilderness so as to make your investigations since you have spotted plumes of smoke as some teenagers set off fireworks. There are caves, landmarks and even backpacks that you can be able to spot. This is where you ask Delilah more about the area just in case you get lost. She is totally familiar with the surroundings.
In the early moments, hiking within the forests and the Shoshone valleys as well as your talks with Delilah are very peaceful in a beautiful way. There is a compass and a map that help you with the basic orienteering and even though you can see the location on the map, you can disable this if you want to go the old fashioned way. This is a truly beautiful place to explore. The art is very colorful and rich and this actually gives you a true sense of place.
In Firewatch, the world is totally open from the beginning and this means that it is possible to Wander off paths and even ignore the objectives if that is what you really want. There are some areas that remain locked up until the time you can locate some equipment. These include things such as anchor ropes and pitons. However, regardless of this, you are still allowed to wander. There are the environmental details which bring the surroundings into a whole new life and this gives them a great history sense. There are lots of things left behind such as summer camp remains, snowmobiles left behind in winder and beat up lookout towers. It becomes much easier to find your way after some time in the fame and the landmarks are really helpful as you continue orienting yourself. Sometimes you do not even require a map.
There is the soundtrack, Gone Home composed by Chris Remo which is very stylish and minimal. Here, layers of an electric guitar and a bass are used so as to give the needed weight to all the moments that are considered as important but you are still able to hear nature surrounding you. There are the squeaking birds, the wind, rustling leaves and the streams trickling. This is what makes the music as special as it comes in at different important parts of the game. When you here the music, you are sure that there is something revelatory, dramatic and emotional that is just about to happen. Most times you talk with Delilah but there are still sections where you enjoy the environmental audio in a quiet setting.
Problems in the wild
In the wilds, there are different kinds of problems that you will have to deal with. They include abseiling down some shale slides using climbing ropes, trying to find a way in areas that are impassable and locating supplies. This is a game that isn’t taxing. The game is more about story, exploration and ambiance. All things happen in first person perspective. There are the expressive and chunky expressions that you will totally love. Even though you don’t see the face, but the limbs have got so much personality than most characters you encounter in other games.
The other thing that will blow you away is the voice acting which is very fantastic. The performance is naturalistic and understated in a superb way. There is great sense of humor and the relationship that grows between Delilah and henry is really superb too. Their chemistry is a great highlight in the game. They comfort each other when they are at low points even though communication is via walkie talkie. Their dialogue is always so touching and you never feel like it is forced or cloying. There are jokes all around when things become too saccharine.
However, the calm doesn’t last forever. The daily routine is interrupted by different events including shadowy figure within the woods. This sets a great mystery in motion and the tone of the game changes very dramatically. What starts so gently becomes something totally different and the pace becomes fraught. You find yourself face to face with some experiences that are unnerving and this change is rather jarring. The mood within the forest changes too. It is no longer solitary and safe. You feel like someone is watching you.
As you walk in the woods, you here twigs crunch behind you as if you are being followed. . This is a very intriguing feeling. This is when you realize just how isolated you really are. You are so far away from civilization and the only companion you have is through a walkie talkie. That is the reassuring voice in your darkness and this is something that also works against you.
Issues with the game
Resolutions to the mysteries are a bit underwhelming. You may find that the set up that is so compelling can end up in a way that is rushed and unsatisfying. You don’t feel true meaning in henry’s journey. All events happening here don’t seem to have a relevance to his personality. There doesn’t seem to be a connection with the events in the forest and what really brought him out here in the first place.
More on the game
The game sounds good and it looks good too because of the world class script which is acted so well by the two leads. There is your chance to play henry as either funny or serious and you find that the performance is great either way you choose to look at it.
Firewatch is set in motion by teenage girls as they launch fireworks. You are allowed to talk to Delilah at any one time as she always has something to say. You may need advice on situations or you may want to report progress on different tasks that have been given to you.
As the game progresses, things become much darker in a figurative and literal sense especially when the teens go missing and you need to try figure out where they are. This is one of the times that very critical and sometimes really difficult decisions need to be made. This is a scary, tense and sometimes funny story as the events unfold. There aren’t so many games that have been able to achieve all this.
Unlike most games within this genre, there is so much to do. A great part of the woods can be explored. There are unique sights to behold and even a turtle that you may adopt. It is always so delightful to discover the surroundings especially as the game begins but things become even more terrifying as you progress with the plot.
