“Take a dump on the face of common sense, this is Disgaea 4!” “Disgaea stands for manly fancy.” “Don’t worry my scared little sheep” “Snatch one of your friend’s characters and discipline them however you like. Oh, you so naughty!” Oh god, my sides. That was the most amazing trailer I have ever seen. I was gushing like a schoolgirl over the trailer of Dead Island, but that trailer doesn’t even come close to the levels of awesome in the trailer of Disgaea 4.
And the game delivers. Imagine Japanese anime craziness combined with a dry, immature sense of humor. You play as a vampire that always keeps his promises, and he promised never to drink human blood again. To quench his endless thirst he now eats delicious and very nutritious sardines. He is a Prinny instructor, little penguins that represent human souls that have gone to Hades, the lowest of all Hells. He instructs them in order for them to advance to the Netherworld where they can atone for their sins through hard work. The first rule of the Prinnies is to say dood in every sentence. And the game just keeps getting more interesting and insane as it goes on
Game and Gameplay
Disgaea 4 is a JRPG. But it’s not your run of the mill, Final Fantasy style JRPG with boring combat, and most on the emphasis put on storyline. It is more along the lines of Final Fantasy Tactics, but much more complex. Battles are more like puzzles, and there are features like picking up characters, stacking them into towers and throwing them over obstacles or on heights. There is even an ability to lift an enemy and create a tower with your characters, until you reach the Moon and smash the enemy on its surface. There is also a Presidential Cam-pain, in which you fight for dominance on a strategic map. You can call in the Senate and vote on bills to make the monsters stronger, or embezzle the senators for money.
The multiplayer aspect of the game is comprised of fights with other players, where you can steal their characters. You can make custom pirate ships, and maps. You can pretty much tell from the trailer that there is a whole lot to do. But don’t worry, the game has a comprehensive tutorial system that will teach you how to do the various techniques throughout the game.
Disgaea 4 is an amazing game. It’s a lot of game in a single package. The gameplay is varied, the fights are challenging and strategic, and the story is interesting and filled with humor. It definitely deserved its Game of the Year award.
This game is original not only in terms of storyline, but gameplay, features and the way it approaches the JRPG genre.
This is a very long game, and you will probably spend of big chunk of your time playing it.
It is not a very well known title, but for JRPG fans, the name Disgaea 4 definitely rings a bell.
Too many to list them here. The trailer shows most of them, and you will find more throughout the game.
